I’ve been a little quiet on the blog front recently as I’m adjusting to my new job. This past week, I was invited to attend a workshop for a work project and shockingly, I now have a boss who thinks I should actually attend meetings that I’m invited to. So I was excited (but a bit nervous honestly) to be considered a valuable employee again.
The work thing was held in the San Jose, California area this past week and ended yesterday, Friday afternoon. I could have flown home to Austin and gotten home at midnight. But then as I was looking around to see if there was anything fun to do this weekend in the area since I was already out here, I realized that I was going to be in the San Jose area the same weekend as the NHL All-Star Game, being played in freaking San Jose. Seriously, if that’s not a nudge from my dad to take advantage of the fact that I was already here…
My dad and I bonded over sports, and I really got into ice hockey in my late teens/early 20s. I had a single season ticket for the Cleveland minor league team, for God’s sake. Because of my interest in the sport, my dad got into hockey too. I used to take my dad to those minor league games a lot because I was usually able to get two seats together by either buying the seat next to me or swapping my ticket for two adjacent seats. And when I worked for radio and television stations, I usually could even get tickets for me and my dad for the corporate suite because I apparently was the only person at the station that appreciated how much fun watching hockey is. I have been to an NHL All-Star Game before but it was over 20 years ago now so it’s practically as if I’ve never been to one, right? I mean, whole adults have been created in the time span since my last All-Star adventure…
So when I realized that I was going to be here for the NHL All-Star Game, I took it as a realization that despite the tumultuous start to the year, that things actually have been working out for the better for me. I’m working with a great team and boss now; I have a role that is challenging me and allowing me to get a few work trips in; and my condo reconstruction after our water damage last year is finally done. I think I deserve a bit of a celebration, right?
So tonight I’ll be sitting in the nosebleed seats at the SAP Center, watching my favorite sport’s All-Star Game and thinking of my dad…
