Skin Cancer Can Strike at Any Age

I just read a story about an 8-year-old in Michigan who was diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma. I cannot imagine how scary that must be for the parents. Although not common – less than 2 percent, skin cancer can strike young children. It’s important for parents to keep an eye out, looking for any changes in their children’s skin.

The parents noted that their child wore sunscreen and was cautious in the sun because of his fair complexion. Obviously, skin cancer has a way of rearing its head even on spots that aren’t the most sun-exposed. The young boy had a bloody, itchy mole.

Childhood skin cancer isn’t common, but it’s good to know the warning signs so parents can be vigilant – just in case.
